Easter Break

Today I am away on a small Easter trip up in Manchester. Upon arrival, the internet isn't as ideal as I first expected so there won't be the regular content today. The proceedings will return to normal on Thursday with my March Album. I hope everyone's break is going well.

Sheer Mag - Button Up SCS

SoundCloud Song

Scuzzy guitar lines seem to be my order of the day. After seeing what SXSW acts other popular music news outlets championed, Sheer Mag definitely shone out as one of the best. I have been listening to this track on repeat since the first time it infiltrated my eardrums. It is a potent mixture of hooky drum beats with snappy lyrics that is sung with a screechy (without being annoying) vocal. Great band and look forward to hearing more.

Kacey Musgraves - Biscuits YTV

24/03/15 YouTube Video

Fresh new track from Kacey Musgraves. This month has been chock full of absolutely jammy Country tracks much like this one. This song has much of the same feel/sound as that of her previous album release with bouncy, cheery songs including a moral/message sung in such a way that you don't quite realise what she is singing about till the end and by that time the chorus is well and truly in your head. Enjoy!

The Preatures - Planet Blue Eyes SCS

SoundCloud Song

I went to Nottingham last week to see The Preatures at The Bodega. It was my first visit to the venue (even the city, for gig related excursions) and I hope it won't be my last because it was fantastic. The venue is a great size for intimate performances by equally great bands such as The Preatures. They really wowed the audience and me with their music skills and they are awesome people on top of that. I chatted to them a bit after the gig and they are really nice and friendly. It is for these reasons and many more that I chose their whole debut for my SoundCloud Songs of this week. I hope you appreciate their talent as much as I do.

Made Violent - Two Tone Hair YTV

17/03/15 YouTube Video

Nothing like a bit of scuzzy pop rock to start off the week. I heard this track through the round table show that Steve Lamacq presents during the week. At first listen I didn't catch the name of the band, or the song title but I just knew that I had to hear it again and again. After a few more repeats of the podcast it was obvious to me that this song is an absolute cracker. Enjoy!

JayBird BlueBuds X Headphones DOTM

Design Of The Month

So for the past few months I have been using on ear bluetooth headphones which I ended up buying because I got so frustrated with how easily the cable on normal corded headphones can bend and lose wiring connection at the jack end. I don't know how many headphones I went through before I bought a bluetooth set, I guess lots. The first and current set I bought were from the brand Outdoor Tech and they are relatively comfortable and fairly strong sound quality despite touch controls being temperamental as hell. Anyway, I recently looked into in-ear bluetooth headphones and fell in love with these JayBird BlueBuds X headphones. From all the reviews I have read I found that the sound quality is excellent, they are lightweight, great value for money, stylish and fit so securely that they won't drop out even during vigorous movement. These may well be my next headphone purchase. One review that shows all the details of the product is shown below. Thanks.

Darlia - Queen Of Hearts YTV

10/03/15 YouTube Video

Fresh off of their latest release is Queen Of Hearts from the ever great Darlia. I have been a big fan of this band for a while now and think their Petals album/EP has so many excellent tracks it was hard for me to choose just one for this blog post. I recently bought a ticket to see them perform live in May and hearing songs like this have built my excitement up to a fever pitch. That gig night can not come soon enough. Enjoy!

Eternal Summers - Together Or Alone SCS

SoundCloud Song

This is the first track in quite a while that has totally shocked me and where I have been totally immersed in the music and had the lyrics take more of a back seat. I don't know what it is, maybe the constant driving drum beat and catchy guitar line that seems to go on forever in my head. I can't quite put my finger on why I love this track so much but I do. I hope you enjoy it at least half as much as me.

Screaming Females - Noisey Specials YTV

03/03/15 YouTube Video

This video is the first part of a series from the guys at Noisey about the great band Screaming Females. They talk about life on the road, the process of writing and creating their latest album Rose Mountain and much more. They are a band that have been around for coming up to 10 years now and I think they are under rated to a certain extent for the awesome music that they produce. I'm definitely looking forward to the next part of the documentary. Enjoy!

Peace - Happy People FA

February Album

Again February has been another great month for new album releases from many artists such as Crushed Beaks, Carl Barat And The Jackals, Marika Hackman and plenty more. But my favourite album  has to be Peace's sophomore album Happy People and man does it put me in good spirits. I have been listening to the deluxe edition with which the 18 tracks come through at over an hour but because the tracks are so joyous and catchy, the time seems to fly by. And also I maybe opposed to popular opinion but I much prefer this to their first heavily loved album. If you haven't heard any of the songs yet, enjoy the brilliant I'm A Girl below.

Ash - Cocoon YTV

24/02/15 YouTube Video

This latest Ash track really shows how a band can still continue to produce excellent music over the many years that they have been together. It has the same great sound and hooky chorus that they know how to do and it still manages to stay upto date and keep up with the more fresh rock bands that have released tracks recently. Enjoy!

Waxahatchee - Under A Rock SCS

SoundCloud Song

Time can not go fast enough! Waxahatchees latest album will be released in early April and myself for one can not wait. So far Wichita Recordings have released 2 tracks from the upcoming release 'Ivy Tripp'. The first being Air which compared to this track (below) is a lot more haunting and slightly depressing lyrically, and the second song being a lot more fresh and cheery coming in at just over 2 minutes long. Don't get me wrong, I love both the tracks and am expecting equally great music from this wonderful musician in the near future.

Peace - God's Gloves YTV

17/02/15 YouTube Video

This weeks chosen video is a bit less of an actual video and more of a picture with music but you get the idea. The track in name is Peace's God's Gloves which I am sure you have realised by now. It is one of my favourite tracks from their second album that was released the other week. With this song and other tracks off of the album, it really shows how great Peace are at producing a killer pop song with a catchy hook and even stronger lyrics. Enjoy!

Fender Telecaster DOTM

Design Of The Month

The great design this month is the epic Fender Telecaster. Or more specifically my Telecaster. I recently purchased a Tele from a mate for a tidy little sum but after a strum or two it seems totally worth it. This guitar is the second Fender guitar that I own and the first electric and boy o boy does it produce some great sounds. In terms of age, I am not entirely sure the origin. The serial number on the main body references back to 1954 but the neck is printed with the custom shop logo which started decades later so my assumption is that it is a mix and match of a couple of different guitars. Whatever the history, the guitar nicknamed 'Mellow Yellow' has been a pleasure to play so far and I hope it keeps producing that same great sound for many more decades.

Findlay - Electric Bones YTV

10/02/15 YouTube Video

What a return from Findlay! They haven't released any new music in a little while but this track will cure that issue. It is a slightly different sound than the Findlay I am used to but it is a change that I am 100% behind. They have kept the rock background of old, and added electro tinged pop over the top. It makes for a fresh and relatively unique sound in the sea of same old pop music. I look forward to hearing more. Enjoy!

Nobunny - Apple Tree SCS

SoundCloud Song

The track this week is a bit of a Throwback Thursday. Burger Records recently posted this track on their SoundCloud page and it was a new listen for me but after a bit of digging, I found out it was released over 5 years ago in 2009. Nobunny (real name Justin Champlin) has been incredibly prolific since his debut in 2008 and has produced many EPs, CDs etc and has been with many different record labels. But thats all superfluous, if he keeps making tracks like this I am going to be a fan for life. I look forward to hearing new stuff from him soon. Enjoy!

Slutface - Angst YTV

03/02/15 YouTube Video

Now this is a tuune! Fresh out of Norway come the shy and retiringly named Slutface with this pop rock hit that gets you in the mood for the summer. Danceable and fun, this track will make you happy no matter what your feeling but this song is more than the catchy beat. It has a strong lyrical message that I and I am sure many of you would understand. The lead singer sings about ideals that men put on women and they strive to have the 'perfect' woman when all she wants is a lot more realistic. I hope you enjoy this track as much as me!

Belated Emmy The Great - S JA

January Album

I know this post is late and I'm sorry to those of you who came looking for a new post yesterday but here it is, only 1 day late. It is a bit of a cheeky one this month with the album not actually being an album but an EP instead, but who really cares. Good music is good music.

Emmy The Great's new release S has a common theme that all the tracks start with the letter (yes you guessed it) s. The whole EP has a futuristic almost grand element running throughout with slight hints of electronic voice effects and instruments. The first two songs start fairy softly and then the energy picks up and peaks on track 3 and lowers back down to finish off the collection of songs nicely and gives you an idea of just some of her talents.

The track Swimming Pool (below) is a slow, gradually building track that has an emotionally moving narrative to the lyrics that are made stronger with the addition of the male vocals supplied from Tom Fleming from Wild Beasts.

Social Halo is probably my personal favourite track. It reminds me of a more gentle early years Tegan and Sara track. You can tell the real beauty of her voice and it has the power to make you hang on to every word that she sings. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

Darlia - I've Never Been To Ohio YTV

27/01/15 YouTube Video

This is another band that continue to release great singles. Blackpool 3 piece Darlia with latest killer tune I've Never Been To Ohio. For me it has elements of a grungy Oasis with the same strong rock sound of Foo Fighters/QOTSA which work extremely well together. Short and sweet but enjoy!
