The Go-Betweens - Spring Rain YTV

30/12/14 YouTube Video

With 2015 just a couple of days away I thought I would look back to a song that for me was newly discovered.  Just under 30 years ago The Go-Betweens released the single Spring Rain which was part of the bands 4th studio album. This is the album that I have listened to first from the group but am looking forward to listening to their other albums. Even though they are an Australian band I think they have a Kinksy quality and a British vibe that you can definitely hear in the song below. Enjoy!

JAWS - Be Slowly YTV

23/12/14 YouTube Video

Last Saturday I went to a gig in Birmingham with The Enemy and The Twang co headlining. It was a brilliant show despite the fact that one prize fool let off smoke bombs and caused the show to stop temporarily.  The Enemy killed their performance as they did last time I saw them in Coventry and they included a couple of great covers from The Verve and James. The Twang were equally brilliant and even though I didn't know much of their material I still had a good time. Anyway, JAWS were support for these bands and after listening to their latest album I was a fan so I was even more elated that they didn't disappoint live. They had that same great vocal sound and really worked well all together, no one instrument was overpowering and they all complimented each other nicely. This track below is off their latest album. Enjoy!

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - Sunday Candy SCS

SoundCloud Song

Chance the Rapper kills it again with this track! Chance and the group DT&TSE with vocals from Jamila Woods make for a sickly catchy song. The combination of boy/girl vocals and instrumental sounds produce quite a gospelly, summery and upbeat song. Chances vocal style are in much of the same style as his previous material but if it aint broke dont fix it. Brilliant track and I look forward to hearing more from these guys.

The Preatures - Ordinary YTV

16/12/14 YouTube Video

This is my second Preatures track this month but I just can't help it, they are just a great band. This song is another release off of the pending album which I hear should be released in the UK early sometime next year. 'Ordinary' has all the things that I loved about their previous single and added a fresh sound and more lyrics that are really strong. All in all just a good time tune. Enjoy!

Case J2 Semi-Hollow Double Cutaway DOTM

Design Of The Month

It is only two weeks till Christmas, can you believe it? This year has gone by really fast and what better gift to celebrate Christmas with than one of these beautiful guitars. The J2 is from Case Guitars with whom the designer/maker (Jon Case) has been making exquisite guitars for many years and he produces handmade in the UK. So thats another reason you should love his work even though the guitars can easily hold up their own. The guitar has a unique style of its own that you don't really see on other Semi-Hollow bodies and he has really fine tuned the subtle details that make it an outstanding guitar. With Maple bookmatched and showing through, both colours look great and I am sure many other colours would look equally good. A classic guitar design aesthetic with a modern take that anybody would be proud to own.

The Killers & Jimmy Kimmel - Joel, The Lump Of Coal YTV

09/12/14 YouTube Video

Christmas time is fast approaching and to get everyone in the mood I thought I would choose the latest from The Killers w/ Jimmy Kimmel. Every year around now since 2006, The Killers have released a Christmassy tune in aid of the (RED) Campaign. This year they have included the help of Jimmy Kimmel in the production and to add a humor element (I presume). The end result is Joel, The Lump Of Coal. It is a slightly downbeat song that slowly bounces along with the energy coming from the singalong chorus. The song may not give you high spirits for the season but the story and the animation may just be enough to put a smile on your face. Enjoy!

Only Real - Yesterdays SCS

SoundCloud Song

Right now is a bit of a crazy time for me, its coming to the end of the term and I have 3 deadlines for university over the next few days and the work has added up to a fair amount of the old pressure. One of the few things that has helped me stay relaxed is the music, especially artists like Only Real. Since his release Pass The Pain I have been a big fan of him and his obvious talent. That is why I have chosen his latest release for my SoundCloud Song. It is a bit more of a chill vibe but still a cracker. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

The Preatures - Better Than It Ever Could Be YTV

02/12/14 YouTube Video

As the year is coming to an end later on this month I thought I would pick a killer track from earlier this year (Feb if I'm not mistaken). It took me a while to find out information about this song, I heard snippets of it here and there on the radio etc and never managed to catch the song title or band name, I just knew the song was brilliant. This was until I heard it on an Intro With La SoundCloud podcast which is a great source for new music btw. Anyway The Preatures are a rock and roll band from Sydney Australia with lead singer Isabella who can produce some fantastic vocals. I have heard that the album is as awesome as this track but I will just have to wait and see. Enjoy!

Purple - (409) NA

November Album

Another great month for music with plenty of albums to choose from. The LP that I have picked is (409) by the band Purple. Other great albums this month come from Superfood, Foo Fighters, Girlpool, Olivia Jean and many more. I was very close to picking the Foo Fighters epic album Sonic Highways but these guys just pipped them to the post. The album has a strong Jack White vibe of guitar playing mixed with elements of Sonic Boom Six style vocals. This sound is most notable on the track below.

This would make a brilliant party album or just an album to mosh out to when you are all alone, either or, whichever you're in the mood for. The shared vocals from male to female also add another dimension to the tracks that I think really benefits their sound. Apart from the single below I like Double Nickels and Beach Buddy as stand out tracks. They have a slightly more Strokes vibe but all as a complete package with the other songs it really really works.

Tuesday 25 November 2014

The Coathangers - Drive YTV

25/11/14 YouTube Video

This video is the latest from Atlanta band The Coathangers. The members have a bit of a Ramones thing going on with them being called Minnie, Rusty and Crook Kid Coathanger. Their sound has a strong punk feel which obviously is another thing they have in common with the Ramo boys. What makes them stand out is the modern day humor and almost relaxed vocal sound that not many punk bands nowadays have. Apart from the music, their whole attitude and persona they give off is something I really admire. Enjoy!

Thursday 20 November 2014

Colleen Green - Pay Attention SCS

SoundCloud Song

Fresh out of the gates is Colleen Greens new track from Hardly Art Records. This song is off her as yet unreleased second album for that record company. I dont know about you but I am for sure going to delve into her first release if it sounds anything like this. This track has quite a lo-fi groove to it with hints of alt rock staples like the trashy and snappy drums and the vocals that have that talk/sing style to them. A hard to categorise track but who's trying, just enjoy the music dude geez.

Tuesday 18 November 2014

Girlpool - Blah Blah Blah YTV

18/11/14 YouTube Video

The album may have been out for a little while but the video for Blah Blah Blah has just been released this week. It is a nice slice of pop rock pie served with great guitar playing and one hell of a catchy vocal. The length is one of the shorter ones compared to the rest off the album with the longest track coming to 2:49 which is by no means a chore to listen to. The album as a whole flies by with such speed you forget you have listened to 7 killer tracks. Great album and definitely worth checking out if you like this single. Enjoy!

Gretsch G5622T DOTM

Design Of The Month

Ever since I became interest in guitars Gretsch have always stood out to be as one of the best in terms of sound quality and of just looking proper sexy. Recently, a relative very kindly agreed to pay most of the way towards the black guitar below seeing as the price was a little over my personal budget. This equals birthday and Christmas presents for the foreseeable future as I'm sure you figured out. The guitar arrived on Tuesday to high expectations and when I removed it from the packaging I was not disappointed. It is a fine work of art that just screams great craftsmanship. It is a pleasure to play and I am going to treasure it for the rest of my life. If you haven't tried a Gretsch out yet you really should, you will be a fan.

Noel Gallagher Noisey Interview YTV

11/11/14 YouTube Video

Fresh new video from the guys at Noisey. Noel Gallagher has a fun chat about topics covering Russell Brand, nights out with Morrissey and the state of the music industry at the moment. He has a few great points and interesting stories. One particular insight into his crisps of choice tickled me slightly. Im so eager to see Noel perform live, in any capacity and in any venue. Lets hope one day my dream will come true. For now this will have to do. Enjoy!

Thursday 6 November 2014

Bare Knuckle Parade - Iron Lungs SCS

SoundCloud Song

Bath natives Bare Knuckle Parade are my choice for this weeks SoundCloud song. This release is off of their new EP that was released on the 5th of November so if you haven't heard it yet its available on Google Music and I presume Spotify etc. The track below has a folky vibe but at the core it is a great rock tune. It totally could be something that Frank Turner could have sung but I really enjoy these guys singing it. They just do a great job. Enjoy!

Link has been removed for Iron Lungs so enjoy this instead :)

Tuesday 4 November 2014

Foo Fighters - Congregation YTV

04/11/14 YouTube Video

I have really been hooked watching the Foo Fighters show on HBO called Sonic Highways. Their latest episode was based on and filmed in Nashville. I have liked the previous two episodes but this one has to be my favourite so far. It discussed the history of the city and how country music has grown with it. The track below is featuring a great country music artist Zac Brown but to me his involvement isn't that strong and the song sounds just like another grand Foo Fighters track. All these episodes are building up to the release of the Foos new album which I am really chomping at the bit for. Other people have said they thought the track sounds countrified but I just think that they have been influenced by the episode. The only thing country that I have picked up on is the story telling nature of the lyrics. All in all, brilliant track. Enjoy!

Ex Hex - Rips OA

October Album

My album from October is Ex Hex with their debut Rips. October has been a slow and steady month for me in terms of good albums that have been released. They have been put out here and there all through the month with a slight surge of great ones right at the end. Other great albums from this month include: Johnny Marr, The Bots, Bass Drum Of Death and Ultimate Painting and more.

I have been a fan of Mary Timony from her time with Wild Flag and that band is the reason I found out about and got into Ex Hex. Rips is a more old school rock sounding record and seems to speed through in terms of length. I think I prefer it to the Wild Flag stuff because it all seems a bit more dirty, scuzzy and straight forward with no pretending which is all things I admire. I hope you like this track and more.

Tuesday 28 October 2014

Double Hitter YTV

28/10/14 YouTube Video

A brilliant Aussie band with a brilliant lead singer. Her voice really is a piece of magic especially when it is coupled with something so natural like two strumming acoustic guitar. The raspy tone has elements of country singer Gretchen Wilson and probably numerous other artists and it is just something that has a special place in my heart. Enjoy this tune!

This week was just going to be one video but after seeing this epic performance by OkGo I just had to include these guys. They are known for being really creative and innovative in their music videos as I first learnt in their Here It Goes Again video. The amount of timing and precision that has gone in to making this is truly incredible. As for the music, it is nothing too crazy. It has a vibe of a Jackson 5 tune that has been remixed in the late 90's but it probably is a good tune if you like to have a bit of a dance. Enjoy!

Thursday 23 October 2014

Wasters - Bloodshot SCS

SoundCloud Song

Wasters latest is a really exciting track. I have recently been listening to a lot of British guitar bands and this song is another cracker for the genre. As you can see from the photo, they are four young boys that are fresh on the scene. It sounds like they have roots in  Britpop and general Indie from the recent past but they have taken it and modernised it totally. They have a truly unique sound which I am really into at the moment. Hopefully they produce more tracks of this quality. Enjoy!

Tuesday 21 October 2014

Kid Wave - Gloom YTV

21/10/14 YouTube Video

Kid Waves latest video Gloom is my favourite choice for this week. The whole video has such an English vibe which I adore. Not many hip young guitar bands like to promote their Englishness which isn't anything to be ashamed of. The video story line is kept fairly simple with a girl looking after and raising a cloud which is as random as it sounds. As for the music, the guitar sound is quite nice, gentle and doesn't really show off but the thing I like the most is the vocals from the leading lady. She has quite a unique accent and it works quite well with the sound of the whole song. Enjoy!

Thursday 16 October 2014

Animal House - Sour SCS

SoundCloud Song

This track sounds so so American (which is no bad thing), with hints of The Strokes and Kings Of Leon so it was quite a surprise that the band were initially from Australia then recently moved to sunny old Brighton. Sour is their first release since forming in early 2014 and it is full of happy snappy guitar riffs, and bouncy vocals sang with such a drawl that will keep you coming back to listen to it again and again. Enjoy!

The So So Glos - Diss Town YTV

14/10/14 YouTube Video

Last night I went to see The Hold Steady live and supporting them was the So So Glos. It was a close call but in my opinion the So So Glos put on a better performance. They have so much energy on stage especially the front man who was bouncing around pretty much the whole show. This track is their latest release from the Blowout album and it has that same great pop/punk sound that is pretty much carried all the way through the album. So if you like this track, you will love the rest of the LP. Enjoy!

Telecaster DIY Kit DOTM

Design Of The Month

I am currently learning how to design and make electric guitars and in doing so I recently purchased the Telecaster DIY kit (pictured below) from Ebay. I had such a good time customising the main body and headstock, varnishing the wood to a nice shiny finish and soldering all the components together and that is why it is my design of the month. It helped me understand the process of wiring a guitar, how a whole guitar gets built up and I also learnt where some mistakes can occur like how to varnish the wood in nice smooth coats without scuff marks. If you are in any way interested in guitar design, I would definitely suggest picking up one of these kits. You can pretty much get all the major model shapes out there so go pick one up.

The Hold Steady - The Bear YTV

07/10/14 YouTube Video

I'm going to see The Hold Steady later on this month and this is getting me pumped up ready to go. The band recorded it for the popular TV show The Game Of Thrones. Initially I thought the lyrics were nonsensical and just for laughs but after looking into it, the words remind me of something like an old story that Vikings would tell their children to keep them out of the woods with a romanticised edge. Full of energy and speed, this track will be a big sing along if they choose to play it live. Enjoy!

Thursday 2 October 2014

Shy Nature - Birthday Club SCS

SoundCloud Song

Shy Nature have been around for a little while now, still no whole album but we patiently wait. This latest track Birthday Club is another soon to be classic. There is a slight retro element to the song but it also has similar elements to current bands like Beach Day and other slightly chill/spaced out artists. It may not be my absolute favourite track of theirs compared to the more fast paced Strokes esque Lie Back but it is enough to grow my want of the oncoming album. Come on Boys!!

Tuesday 30 September 2014

Holly Drummond - Blame It On Me YTV

30/09/14 YouTube Video

Holly Drummond is an artist that I have championed for a long while now. She is a Scottish singer songwriter who has produced a few great EPs, which you can get from her BandCamp page. This track was made popular by the equally brilliant George Ezra and this version is definitely more spooky, slow and sultry compared to the upbeat and bouncy style of the original. Holly has the ability to make you really listen to the lyrics of a track because every word she sings carries emotion and a sense of power that makes you focus and pay close attention. Beautiful. Enjoy!

Thursday 25 September 2014

Twin Peaks - Wild Onion SA

September Album

This month has been mostly a two horse race between two great albums. One being the Catfish And The BottleMen début and the other being Wild Onion by Twin Peaks, and of course Twin Peaks has won out. Other notable albums from the month have been produced from The Kooks, Counting Crows, King Tuff and Broncho to name but a few. I chose Twin Peaks because over the length of their album which is jammed with 16 tracks, it never gets tiresome and always stays fresh and keeps you interested. I also like that they have produced a longer album seeing as other bands in their genre like to make more shorter and perhaps snappier albums which ~Twin peaks almost rebelled against. One stand out track is Making Breakfast (below) which is as catchy as any of their singles and just as brilliant.

Tuesday 23 September 2014

Van & Lamacq Discuss The Balcony YTV

23/09/14 YouTube Video

This is an interview that Steve Lamacq and Van from Catfish And The Bottlemen did to go alongside their new album release The Balcony. Steve talks Van through the songs of the album and questions him about meanings and possible stories relating to the tracks. Steve has a way of making the interviewee feel comfortable and really open up which makes for great viewing. The whole interview is a really enjoyable listen and Van seems a very straight talking and cool young man. Enjoy!

Darlia - Stars Are Aligned SCS

SoundCloud Song

These guys seem to be making hit after hit!
This is the latest from Blackpool band Darlia (Stars Are Aligned). It starts off with quite a heavy intro but then merges into more of an upbeat and punchy track. It has a pop punk era element to the music a la Blink 182 and Green Day but alongside is very British vocals which has a bit of a Gallagher drawl to it. I fell in love with the previous singles they released and this is no exception. If Darlia keep going as they are, they will be set to have a massive album and hopefully an enthralling live show. Enjoy!

Tuesday 16 September 2014

Garfunkel and Oates - Fade Away YTV

16/09/14 YouTube Video

This week is a bit of a different flavour. I caught these guys on Conan O'Brien's talk show. At first I was intrigued by the name seeing as they are two people from massively influential duos brought together. I also recognised  Kate Micucci from the TV show Raising Hope. Both Kate and her partner Riki Lindhome are a comedy folk duo that have been releasing music pretty solidly since 2009. This track is a previously unreleased song and presumably from an upcoming album. Its full of funny one liners and the chorus is super catchy. I also find the combination of ukelele and guitar alongside their voices works really well. Enjoy!

House of Hungarian Music DOTM

Design Of The Month

I have recently found out about this really cool piece of architecture. Its a design proposal for The House Of Hungarian Music in Budapest created by New York based Leeser Architecture. The whole build has no straight lines or planar surfaces which creates such a fluid and organic shape. It is clear that the feel of music was inspired in this design. Part of the building is meant for live music performances and is shaped and constructed to provide the best acoustics quality possible to the audience. Also throughout the building there are walkways and viewing platforms that make the most of the surrounding landscape. Beautiful!

Sleater-Kinney - You're No Rock N Roll Fun YTV

09/09/14 YouTube Video

This track is a bit of a throw back to the 2000s. Sub Pop Records are going to reissue most or all of the Sleater-Kinney back catalogue in October and to promote this, they posted the single track from their 5th studio album along with a collection their of other pieces of work on their YouTube page. I was aware of Sleater-Kinney mainly thanks to Carrie Brownstein, the guitarist in the band. Her newer band Wildflag and comedy TV show Portlandia are two brilliant things that if you haven't heard of yet you need to check them out. I think this song is great because it shows how Carrie has grown as a guitar player over the years and now playing in Wildflag. Also the band as a whole pull off a sound that still sounds so current and modern being over a decade old which is no mean feat. An awesome song by an awesome band. Enjoy!

Thursday 4 September 2014

Only Real - Pass The Pain SCS

SoundCloud Song

This track has a great combination of sounds. It has the lyrical skills of a young Jamie T with a great speed and wit included. Also the track has the guitar riffage of a classic indie rock tune that could easily suit songs that are darker and have a more solemn feel but work great with his style. It has many different levels ranging from chipper and upbeat verses to more chill choruses and with all of this stuff being brought together makes for a killer track. Enjoy!

Manchester YTV

02/09/14 YouTube Video

It is with the deepest sadness that this week there will not be the standard YouTube video due to my venturings up to Manchester and lack of proper facilities. I will however recommend listening to the newly released Twin Peaks album if you haven't already. It is truly spectacular and one for fans of great alt rock.
Below is an amazing piece of graffiti that we spotted whilst walking around the city centre.

I will be back on Thursday with regular postings.

Childhood - Lacuna AA

August Album

This month has produced so many great albums. It has made it really hard to choose just one favourite but the début album from Childhood is definitely one of the best. Other great albums that are worth listening to are Merchandise - After The End, J Mascis - Tied To A Star and Beach Day - Native Echoes to name just a few. Overall Lacuna has a spaced out sound which is shown especially in the vocals and the guitar. The latter sound ranges from upbeat and bouncy to more of a deep and powerful feeling but always has that distinct Childhood dreamy style. I first got into this band after seeing them a couple of times live and they put on awesome performances and their live sound translates really well in this album. I have chosen to show off Solemn Skies because it is one of the longer tracks off of the album and it shows their lyrics and instrument style for all its worth. I also like how grand a track it is, to me it is bordering on anthemic which is no bad thing and the chorus is made for sing a longs with your mates. Awesome! (Below is a shortened version of the track but you get the idea)

Tuesday 26 August 2014

Mighty Oaks - Seven Days YTV

26/08/14 YouTube Video

This is an acoustic track from German band Mighty Oaks. It is a special session with Rolling Stone featuring the 3 members and 3 beautiful instruments. Alongside the great instrumental technique shown by the band members, the other this that I rate highly from this song is the vocal harmonies that they pull off. Their voices seem to compliment each others extremely well and really add strength to the choruses and specific lines. I'm looking forward to a full LP from these boys. Enjoy!

Thursday 21 August 2014

The Lemons - Michael Lennie SCS

SoundCloud Song

This is probably the shortest track I have put on this blog but that doesn't in anyway relate to its quality. Coming in at a neat 32 seconds, it gives me the impression of a great 60's style theme song for a sitcom. Think The Monkees for a really obvious example. Singing about this mysterious guy Michael Lennie with some stunning jangly guitars and dual boy/girl vocals makes for a pretty sweet listen. I am definitely excited to hear more from these guys.

Kasabian Sesame Street/Good Vibrations YTV

19/08/14 YouTube Video

Such a fun video this one, with Kasabian covering the great childhood tv theme of Sesame Street. And even though the main reason Good Vibrations was included was to elongate the track, the two songs work really well together as do the dual vocals of Tom and Serge. The real highlight I have picked up from this video is the sense of humour that Kasabian have shown that previously I have not picked up on. I appreciate the fact that they can have a laugh and not always take things super seriously. It is a light hearted song and the total opposite end of the spectrum from headlining Glasto and still a great little medley guys. Enjoy!

Vango Arc DOTM

Design Of The Month

Seeing as the festival is winding down around this time of year I thought what better to talk about than an obvious must for camping out in a field. I have recently upgraded my tent after it has taken a beating and just about survived strong weather conditions at festivals, to this tent from Vango. I chose it because Vango is a brand I trust and they produce great high quality goods and the design of it isn't like your average dome tent. The two poles working to create an arched tunnel which works really effectively against wind and rain alike. The arches also gives the feel of a church/chapel-ly thing. I also like the design because the distinctive shape really stands out and proves that not always the most conventional design is always the best. I cant wait to hit the next festival season hard in this!

Tuesday 12 August 2014

Jamie T - Zombie YTV

12/08/14 YouTube Video

This new track is AWESOME!!! As much a I liked the previously released track from his new album, this one has more of the sound that I have got used to from Jamie T. The video has a fun sense of humour (which I really appreciate) as through out the song, the band members slowly turn into zombies in-front of a completely uninterested standard daytime pub crowd with a bit of slap stick thrown in for good measure. The sound of the lyrics is also reminiscent of previous albums with clever hooky chorus and his talking/singing vocal style. Overall a pretty damn great song. Enjoy!

Thursday 7 August 2014

Beach Day - BFF's SCS

SoundCloud Song

Today is my 24th birthday (Woo Hoo!) and what better way to celebrate than catching up on all of the new music on SoundCloud that I have missed whilst at Camp Bestival. I am really enjoying this new track from Beach Day, it goes at a slight slower pace than their other tracks which is no bad thing. It leans heavily on the Dum Dum Girls sound and shares the honest storytelling lyrics a la Courtney Barnett and Jenny Lewis' Just One Of The Guys track. As the summer is winding down, it seems a perfect time to just chill out and listen to this relaxed surf pop rock track. Enjoy!

Tuesday 5 August 2014

Beans On Toast - Can't Take Another Earthquake YTV

05/08/14 YouTube Video

I have just came back from Camp Bestival and what better choice for a video than to praise two of the artists that performed a great set at the festival. This track from all the way back in 2011 is from Beans On Toast featuring Kate Tempest. It is one of BOTs more child friendly tracks with a catchy chorus even with serious issues included that went down really well on the Sunday afternoon. It was also fun to here how he edited down some of his more adult themed songs for the younger audience but his style of song writing and playing didn't diminish and will always sound good to me. Enjoy!

Thursday 31 July 2014

Honeyblood - Honeyblood JA

July Album

The album I have enjoyed listening to this month has been the self titled début from Honeyblood. It has quite an overall lo fi quality with certain tracks having amped up guitars for a change of pace. It has a hint of some riot grrrl bands but less in your face and more soft and soothing vocals. I really enjoy Killer Bangs in the vocal department because it is slightly more upbeat and bouncy, also Super Rat is another favourite because the power and emotion they put into the lyrics seems really meaningful and passionate. There does seem to be a lot of two piece rock groups popping up at the moment but this is one of my personal favourites.  Enjoy one of their singles Bud below!

Tuesday 29 July 2014

Hot Soles - Ready To Burn YTV

29/07/14 YouTube Video

I have just returned from Tramlines festival yesterday and am leaving for Camp Bestival tomorrow so I am currently in the middle of great times. I have chosen this track this week because whilst at Tramlines Hot Soles live show really stood out to me and was a band that I previously have never heard of before. Other stand out performances from the festival were Shy Nature, The Bromheads, Neon Waltz and PINS who were were part of a great build up to the Sat headliners Deap Vally. I'm looking forward to more brilliant live music this weekend down at Lulworth Castle. Enjoy!

Thursday 24 July 2014

Stone Age Brain - Jen Cloher Ft. Courtney Barnett SCS

SoundCloud Song

This is a great live performance of a track Jen Cloher originally did with a man called Tim Rogers. In this version he has been replaced by the ever increasingly popular Courtney Barnett. There are several reasons why I prefer this track over the original: I really think the acoustic guitar sound compliments the vocals and makes the lyrics easier to hear rather than the electric guitar which slightly overpowers them. Also I prefer the girl/girl vocals as opposed to the boy/girl vocals of the original mainly because I think Tims voice is a bit too harsh on the ears for a track that sounds like it should be more mellow. But who knows, maybe I have just fell in love with Courtneys voice too much to prefer another instead. Enjoy!

Tuesday 22 July 2014

Devin Davis - Giant Spiders YTV

22/07/14 YouTube Video

I have been meaning to talk about and share this song for some time now. I found out about it by chance whilst randomly trawling through the internet music sites and I was immediately hooked. This track is off of an almost decade old album from Devin Davis. After looking in to him a bit further I still don't know a great deal apart from this album being the only one he has released so far, a couple of dated interviews and from his website there is positive warnings that there is new material on the way (but who knows how long that post has been up for). This track is one of a bunch of brilliant tracks that you can listen to on YouTube. Straight off the bat it has clear influences of that 60's sound. I thought particularly a Beach Boys, Monkees-esque vibe with a hint of The Who but that seems almost too boxed in of a category for this song. I like how the drum beat has a rolling effect that gives the track a slight surfer vibe and the vocals are the right mix of hooky chorus line and great meaningful lyrics. Incredible stuff, enjoy!
